I called several local tire places today to get a price on having a set of tires I bought at Tire Rack mounted and balanced on my beater DD '91 Ford Ranger. One place, Tire Discounters, asked if they were new or used. I thought it was an odd question but I said new. The guy on the phone said that company policy forbids them from mounting new tires that they did not sell. At first I assumed that it was to discourage people from buying online but I asked the reason for the policy. The reply was "If I ruin your tire while mounting it, we have to replace it." They don't want to have to replace tires they did not sell. After I hung up, I thought about it a bit. If they are that worried about damaging a tire just from mounting it, I don't think I ever want them working on any of my vehicles!
